If I had to summarize this book in one word, it would be provocative. The writing amazes with its precision in describing the ebb and flood of emotion, scheming and shame that torment Raskolnikov. With nothing left to lose she will risk everything to uncover the truth about the tainted. Major can't even decide whether her villain is pure evil for the sake of evil or a misunderstood victim in his own right - and no, that doesn't mean he's written with a hint of nuance or genuine moral ambiguity.
